In Contemplation of Freedom: It began with some questions.

Is freedom something that is gifted or taken? Does freedom truly exist in this material world and if so where do we find it? Or is it a feeling and experience we discover?

The exploration of these questions led to 9 of us deciding that we wanted to explore these questions with the larger community.

So for 4 months, we transformed Repair the World on Nostrand Avenue into a maroon space in the center of rapidly gentrifying Crown Heights.

We didn’t want to only talk to our friends so we literally pulled folks off the streets and into an experience where they could ponder this one question:

What does freedom mean to you?

Cheryl Browne - plant collage.

Delano Burrowes - performance.

Aisha Tandiwe Bell - sculpture.

Kay Hickman - photography.

Tiffany Lobban Martin - performance.

Warner Sabio - collage and set design.

We also hosted political candidate Adem Bunkeddeko who talked about his candidacy for Congress.

We’re planning on anniversarying (not sure it was a real word until now) this event every Juneteenth.
