We believe that all people want to live in diverse and inclusive communities where their neighbors are thriving. Most people don’t like gentrification yet don’t know what to do about it.
But what if we use principles of cooperative economics and racial equity to pool the capital of long-term residents and new, so our communities can grow wealth together?
Using Liberatory Design principles, we experiment and test approaches in our communities, grounding ourselves in history as healing and instructive. We practice creative courage, reinvigorating our ability to imagine, dream, design, and create equitable futures together.
The CORRIDOR + Flatbush African Burial Ground
-
THE CORRIDOR transcends preservation - it actively weaves a cultural and economic ecosystem that prevents the displacement of Black people in Brooklyn while safeguarding and nurturing our Black history, culture creation, and evolution.
-
As one of the cultural anchors in the CORRIDOR, the FABG is an important marker of Black history in Brooklyn from the 1600s to the present.
Black Land Access Cooperative - “BLAC” Brooklyn
-
Building on past and present examples of collective stewardship, we’re building structures in Brooklyn to catalyze Black staying power.
-
For the first time in decades, communities in historically Black New York, such as Bed-Stuy, Crown Heights, and Lefferts Gardens, will have less than 50% Black residents.
The Black Utopia Project
-
We see utopia as a verb - a process of dreaming, designing, trying, and refining.
-
We understand that when the most marginalized communities gain power, we all do.
